Google on Wednesday will close off access to the part of Google Talk that lets third-party developers send and receive text messages. Third-party applications, such as Infinite SMS for the iPhone and desktop chat software that made use of this XMPP pathway will no longer be able to freely send text messages to other mobile phones.

The company simply no longer wanted to foot the bill for that part of Google Talk's API, according to a Google statement posted by Infinite SMS creators Innerfence.

According to Google, Gmail is the first leading webmail service to include video chat. All that's needed is a webcam, a microphone/headset and a browser plugin, rather than a program download like Skype.

While the service is browsers based, the world's 1% of Linux desktop users will unfortunately find they have been once again given short shrift as Google Voice & Video Chat requires at least Windows XP or an Intel-Based Mac with Mac OS X v10.4 or later to work. It seems to be a familiar story that mainstream software and services producers are ignoring the Linux desktop platform while continuing to roll out products for Windows and the Mac.

However, the wide variety of browsers on the market are covered by the new Google service. It works in all browsers that support the latest version of Gmail (Google Chrome, Firefox 2.0+, Internet Explorer 7.0, and Safari 3.0). Linux desktop users take note that Konqueror is not mentioned.

A San Diego-based telecom provider has launched the public beta of a web-based service VoxOx, which it is calling the first universal communicator providing free VoIP, video chat, SMS, file sharing, fax and IM/social network/e-mail aggregation for both Macs ad PCs.

The design is very much like the homepage of an iPhone, and coincidentally, while a mobile web-based version already exists, an iPhone app is set to be released in the next 60 days.

The IM/e-mail/social network functionality is nothing new as programs like Digsby, Pidgin, or Adium have been offering this for a while.  But VoxOx is one of the first to combine this service with free voice, and also to give out free phone numbers.

Talisma Corporation (News - Alert), selling what it calls Customer Interaction Management software, has announced availability of version 8.1 of its multi channel products.  This release adds capabilities to Talisma Chat (News - Alert), Talisma E-mail and reporting, company officials say.

"With 8.1, Talisma provides functionality to help businesses cross sell and upsell to their customer base," with the additional reporting in 8.1 giving businesses "an in-depth look at how they can deliver the best customer experience," said Dan Vetras, President and CEO, Talisma Corporation. 

Talisma Chat 8.1 enables Payment Card Industry compliance for companies that accept online payments: "Agents can see customer credit card information and other personal data in the chat window, however, any data matching pre-configured patterns will be removed from the transcript and CIM database," company officials say.

The AIM app for iPhones works pretty well -- if your friends are all on AOL's IM system. But a company called Palringo claims its new app will work with all of the major players:

 Palringo integrates with several existing, popular instant messaging services: AOL's AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, Gadu Gadu, ICQ, Jabber and Windows Live Messenger. People can also use Palringo to contact their friends using iChat, Apple's instant messaging (IM) client.

I have yet to try it, but the earliest review I've seen is mostly positive.

Palringo is the true, multiservice IM application iPhone users were asking for after they were underwhelmed by the free AIM application, which only allowed users to chat with one service.

From my testing, the application freezes my iPhone every now and then, but practically all my downloaded apps are doing that anyway. We'll just have to hope the next firmware update will seal the cracks.
